Q: Is it really true that sophomores taking classes can’t apply for croos?
A: Yes. The summer term calendar is currently scheduled such that Section D trippees arrive on the last day of summer classes, meaning that students enrolled in classes during the summer term would finish their finals well after the start date for support croos. That being said, students taking classes over the summer are still welcome and encouraged to apply to be trip leaders!
Q: Do I need to like dancing?
A: No! If all of our volunteers loved singing and dancing, then we wouldn’t be able to fully acknowledge the experiences of the many trippees who are uncomfortable with the singing and dancing that takes place on Trips. We love having volunteers who enjoy dancing, and we equally love volunteers who don’t like it at all. Same goes for being loud, extroverted, or a big fan of goofy outfits.
Q: Do I need outdoors experience to volunteer for specific trips or croos?
A: NO! Even on specific trips like whitewater kayaking, mountain biking, canoeing, or rock climbing, we will give you the tools necessary to be a successful trip leader. For Vox Croo (hiking), Oak Hill Croo (mountain biking and ropes course), Klymbing Kroo (rock climbing), and Grant Croo (whitewater kayaking and canoeing), some croo members will need to have some experience, but we are also looking for inexperienced people who are willing to learn! Not having prior outdoors experience can make you more relatable to the many trippees who are also learning a new skill or going on an outdoors trip for the first time.
Q: Do you have to be a W-EMT or EMT to be a safety lead on a croo?
A: Not necessarily, but we do prioritize students with higher medical certifications (EMT and W-EMT) when it comes to filling those positions. That being said, it is possible to be selected as a safety lead if you have another level of medical certification (e.g. WFR, EMR, or OEC).
Q: If I’m selected, what sort of training will I receive leading up to Trips?
A: The training program includes 10-12 hours of training sessions (not necessarily all at once), and leaders can even get PE credit for them! Sessions are offered throughout the spring and summer terms. If selected to be a trip leader, you’ll need to complete the following trainings prior to Trips 2015:
• Community Building • Wilderness Skills • Risk Management • First Aid/CPR (unless you’re already certified) • Trip-specific outdoor experience (e.g. if you’re leading a kayaking trip, you’ll get to go on a kayaking trip before Trips starts!)
